They said the monuments were better after dark
Once the masses have retired from the passion of the day
The in-room entertainment has been edited for content
The language has been silenced but the violence remains
And the world waits
We’ll take a lesson from this textbook of a park
The pastel of the columns in the shadow of a speech
Words to cure a household so callously divided
Family versus family and the calumny they teach
We’re past reach
Aren’t we the daughters of the daughter of a soldier?
Maybe we should know?
Something in an anecdote they’ll tell us when we’re older
Something in our bloodstream to prepare us for the blow
It started subtle, but the wall is gonna climb
A testament to battles that we never knew were lost
A fallen comrade, an unfamiliar concept
We never take an ally til we're certain of their cause
But we’ll pause
Every child becomes a murderer in time
We take our leave of absence and we scatter from our homes
They offer contrast, these killers out of context
Someone else’s brother has been chiseled into stone
Not ours, though.
Aren’t we the daughters of the daughter of a soldier?
Maybe we should grieve?
Fingers brush the letters, but the marble’s getting colder
No amount of reverence could survive the coming siege.
We’re not permitted any further than the gate
When we finally reach the mansion standing pale against the night
And we’ve conceded, we’re fully in agreement
Women of our background are better left outside
We’re not right
There’s a mother here who’s never been betrayed
There’s a father guarding shore to sullied shore
There are little girls oblivious to conflict
How much have they gathered through the heat vents in the floors?
Through slammed doors.
Aren’t we the daughters of the daughter of a soldier?
Maybe we should fight?
No one can protect us now, the armistice is over
Better to desert before the mercenaries come for Grace and Light.
